Androgyny was one of the first signifiers proposed in Freud’s works.
Starting with “Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality”, the concept of androgyny has developed in the contradictory direction of “active-passive”.
Since 1905, Freud has used the term androgynous to support the idea that there is only one male libido.
So, what should women do in order to become women with masculine libido?
When Freud used the term “active-passive,” he was not referring to the division of sexual organs, nor to the opposition of “male-female,” but rather to a polar concept that replaced the “difference” of sexual organs. Furthermore, in his 1905 work, *Sexual Impulses and Their Fate*, he pointed out that human sexual impulses are not based on a male-female pair, but rather on two poles completely devoid of sexual characteristics—”active-passive” and “subject-object.”
Thus, sexual impulses become a real mystery: from an unconscious perspective, the mutual attraction between men and women is itself a problem.
