Is it too early to talk about sex? A new study shows that some boys have already engaged in sexual activity before the age of 13 .

Parents may only be reminding their underage children to brush their teeth, clean their rooms, and submit book reports on time, without thinking about talking to their children about sex.

A 2019 study published in JAMA Pediatrics found that 3.6% to 7.6% of boys said they had engaged in sexual activity before the age of 13 .

Researchers hope to foster more dialogue among parents, schools, and healthcare institutions regarding healthy social interaction and early, age-appropriate sex education for boys.

David Bell, assistant professor of pediatrics at Columbia University Irving Medical Center , and Samantha Garbers, associate professor at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health , called for increased accountability from all parties.

” It is crucial that young people reflect on the real pressures that American society places on them, pressures that affect their health and well-being. “

In their research editorial, they wrote: ” Any discussion related to stress should include ‘ what it means to be a man , ‘ as well as seeking and giving consent. “

Race, geography, and the mother’s education are factors.

This study included two large survey databases. One was from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Adolescent Risk Behavior Surveillance System, which included nearly 20,000 boys in grades 9-12 who completed the questionnaires in 2011 , 2013 , and 2015 .

Another source is interview data from nearly 8,000 men aged 15-24 collected from the National Family Growth Survey between 2006 and 2015 .

According to some demographic data, the number of boys and young men with precocious sexual behavior varies, sometimes significantly.

In San Francisco, 5% of boys have had sexual intercourse before the age of 13. In Memphis, that figure is 25% .

Statistics show that boys whose mothers have a college degree or other higher education are much less likely to have sex before the age of 13 .

Black men are more likely to have sex before the age of 13 , followed by Hispanic men. Compared to Black men, white men are 79% less likely to have sex before the age of 13 , and Hispanic men are 73% less likely .

Most people have sex at age 17

Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) shows that the average age at which boys and girls have their first sexual experience is about 17 years old.

Bell and Gabels commented that research shows that when boys and girls have their first sexual experience earlier, they are at greater risk of developing sexually transmitted diseases, alcoholism, and school problems.

The study found that most boys who had sex before the age of 13 said they had sex with a ” friend ” .

Of these, nearly 55% of people felt that the experience was ” desirable , ” 37% had mixed feelings, and 8.5% felt that it was ” undesirable . “

The data focuses solely on heterosexual behavior.
