Many bodhisattvas are said to come to the human world on the first and fifteenth of the lunar month, so it is not advisable to engage in sexual activity on these days.
This is not only a tribute to heaven and earth, but also a continuation of the traditional Chinese civilization that has lasted for thousands of years.
Dr. Zheng reminds people that other festivals related to the underworld, such as Qingming Festival, Zhongyuan Festival, and Winter Solstice, have a heavier yin energy, and it is not advisable to engage in sexual activity during these times to prevent yin energy from affecting the body and causing misfortune.
II. From a modern perspective:
The “full moon night” corresponds to the 14th to 16th day of the lunar calendar . During this time, the moon’s gravitational pull on the earth can cause emotional fluctuations and affect the quality of sperm and egg cells, making it an unsuitable time for conception. Furthermore, the earth’s magnetic field is stronger, which may increase the risk of birth defects.
If your menstrual cycle is regular, ovulation usually occurs about 14 days before your next period, with the ovulation period lasting 4-5 days before and after. Having intercourse every other day during the ovulation period increases the chances of getting pregnant.
Traditional Chinese thought categorizes men and women as yang and yin, with men being yang and women being yin. Sexual intercourse between men and women is necessary for procreation, as the saying goes, “Isolated yin cannot produce, isolated yang cannot grow.”

III. What are the traditional taboos regarding sexual relations between men and women?
Taboo 1:
Not all days are suitable for sexual intercourse. The following times are not recommended for sexual intercourse:
1. Sexual intercourse is not advisable on the days of the Four Beginnings and Four Solstices. The Four Beginnings and Four Solstices are the eight solar terms: Beginning of Spring, Beginning of Summer, Beginning of Autumn, Beginning of Winter, Great Cold, Great Heat, Spring Equinox, Autumn Equinox, Summer Solstice, and Winter Solstice. During these days, the changes in the heavens and earth are significant, so sexual intercourse is not recommended as it may negatively impact health and fortune.
4. Sexual intercourse is not advisable on the nine most inauspicious days in the lunar calendar.
Taboo Two: It is forbidden for men and women to be discovered having sex.
If a man and woman are accidentally seen having sex, it is detrimental to both of them and to the other person. It can easily lead to bad luck, and in reality, there are quite a few people who have regretted it for the rest of their lives because of this.

3. It is not advisable to kill animals on the Lantern Festival. Seeing blood on this day is considered an ominous sign, implying financial loss and illness, so it should be avoided as much as possible.
4. It is not advisable to use foul language on the Lantern Festival. If you say something unlucky on this day, you will suffer misfortune this year because of what you said unintentionally.

7. It is not advisable to wear white or black clothes on the Lantern Festival. These two colors are closely associated with death, and seeing these two colors on such a joyous occasion will bring bad luck to the wearer.
8. It is not advisable to wash your hair on the Lantern Festival because the word for hair (发) is the same as the word for wealth (发财). Therefore, washing your hair on this day is believed to wash away all your wealth, meaning that you will not be able to save any money this year.
9. It is considered inauspicious to break tools or other equipment on the Lantern Festival, as it is believed to signify the loss of wealth in the coming year. Therefore, most merchants will avoid large-scale mechanical operations on this day to prevent bad things from happening.
10. It is not advisable to go to places with heavy yin energy or bad luck on the Lantern Festival, such as graves, desolate places, hospitals, etc., especially for people with weak yang energy or poor health, who should not get too much bad luck on this day.
