Many people say that betrothal gifts are a good way to test a relationship. No matter if you’ve been dating for three, five, or seven years, the topic of betrothal gifts can break up many couples.

My colleague, Brother Lin, experienced this harsh treatment firsthand. He is a native of western Guangdong, where the bride price is not high, generally around 50,000 yuan. The main point is to show your sincerity and wish for good luck.

At that time, Lin’s girlfriend was a girl from Jiangxi whom he met in college. The two started dating in their junior year. After graduation, the girl also stayed in Guangdong to work. After working for a few years, their families urged them to hurry up and get married.

So the two sides started discussing the bride price. The woman said her parents were asking for 288,000 yuan, plus a house in Guangzhou , so that both of them could stay in Guangzhou to work.

Upon hearing this amount, Lin was shocked. He said he never expected his girlfriend of six years to ask for such an exorbitant sum. At the time, she said she could secretly give Lin 100,000 yuan as a subsidy, mainly to get past his parents’ objections.

After discussing it with his family, and with his sister also able to help, Lin decided to grit his teeth and finalize the marriage.

But less than a month later, the woman’s family changed their minds again, demanding an additional 200,000 yuan in betrothal gifts, because her younger brother was about to graduate and they also needed to consider his marriage.

When Lin heard this, he laughed in anger. His concessions and compromises had not earned him any understanding, and the other party had only become more unreasonable. So he decisively broke up with her.

During that time, the woman tried her best to salvage the relationship, saying she could reduce the bride price, but in the end, Lin blocked all her contact information. 02

A perfectly good relationship, the two of them had been together for six years, going through the ambiguous period, the adjustment period and the later stable period, but in the end it got stuck on the ever-increasing dowry and material conditions.

Some people treat the bride price as a matter of face, blindly comparing and following trends ; others treat their daughters as resources, wanting to use the marriage to benefit their families and sons .

This would not only deplete their savings but also damage their years-long relationship. Even if they eventually get married, they would find it difficult to live together harmoniously after marriage.
