Mr. Nan Huaijin said that most physical illnesses originate from the mind. When the mind is not upright or pure, the body suffers from many ailments. What is a pure mind? It is a mind that is free from delusions and distractions, absolutely pure. Delusions, distractions, and afflictions arise from joy, anger, sorrow, pleasure, and the conflict between self and others. The *Great Treasury of Healing Medicines* mentions many illnesses, each related to problems in our mental and behavioral patterns.
“Extreme joy or anger is a disease.” Being excessively joyful or angry, or clinging to one’s own prejudices and biases, is a disease. Especially extreme joy or anger, will first affect the liver, leading to future problems.
“To abandon righteousness for profit is a disease.” To be a person and do things without benevolence and righteousness, to be disloyal to friends, and to only seek personal gain is a serious disease.
“Lust corrupts morality, which is a disease,” meaning that lust leads to a disregard for human ethics and morality. These diseases refer to the root causes of human problems, psychological behaviors, and fall under the scope of psychology, which is a modern science. We know that all leaders in the world today, whether political, business, or social, must most importantly study psychology and behavior; it is an essential course for today’s leaders. Those who truly understand psychological leadership must further study the Yogacara school of Buddhism and the psychological pathologies described by the Buddha, and this has become the latest science. In fact, no field of study in the world is truly new; they are all old, merely inventing new terms and writing new theories. At least to me, they seem laughable; they simply change the terminology and thus mislead modern people. If we use the pathologies described in Buddhism to study human psychology and behavior, especially those studying the psychology of leadership, they must understand this. As for cultivating oneself, every point here is a precept that should be recited daily.
Next, let’s talk about the medicine for healing. “Politeness in movement and stillness is one medicine,” this is very difficult. Movement and stillness encompass many things: being polite in all aspects of life, including reason. “Moderation in daily life is one medicine,” meaning a regular lifestyle. “Following one’s proper place and acting righteously is another medicine.” Following one’s proper place means adhering to one’s duty. What is one’s duty? Everyone has their own boundaries, men have their own boundaries. In friendships, there are boundaries in speech, conduct, and attitude. Exceeding these boundaries is going too far. Going too far easily leads to mistakes. Don’t do excessive things, don’t say excessive things, and don’t do excessive actions. In life and work, one must know one’s duty; duty is one’s stance. Speech, conduct, and actions must all have a stance. Don’t speak recklessly or arbitrarily; once a word is spoken incorrectly, there’s no way to change it.
“Although I hate someone, I still feel a lingering affection is a cure.” Even if I despise someone and feel intense hatred, I still feel that they are a human being and that I should try to change them, show them compassion, and cherish them. This is a remedy for a troubled heart. If one can do this, everyone will have morality and live a long life. I believe that couples who have been in a long-term relationship or have become husband and wife are all suffering from this ailment and need this medicine. Even when hatred reaches its extreme, there is worry when they don’t return for a long time, and reluctance to let go when they leave—all of this is a state of lingering affection despite hatred. If we expand this affection to all people, that is the greatest medicine.
“Educating the ignorant is one remedy,” and the “remedy” here refers to a virtuous act. Virtue is action; only by accumulating virtue can one attain enlightenment and realize the Way. You often talk about Zen enlightenment, but is enlightenment so easy? Without accumulating virtue, one cannot even be a decent human being, so what’s the point of enlightenment? Besides, you can’t even attain enlightenment. Even if you did, what would be the point? If you then go and mislead others, that would be terrible!
Therefore, having this opportunity to share this article, “The Great Treasury of Healing Medicines,” with everyone should serve as a standard for moral conduct, which is also fundamental to learning Buddhism.
The Great Treasury of Healing Medicines was written by the eminent Tang Dynasty monk Shi Lingche. It selects one hundred kinds of psychological and mental illnesses and proposes one hundred treatment methods by integrating Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism.

This is the source of all diseases. If one can eliminate all these diseases with a single thought, and by examining oneself daily to prevent any disease from arising, one will be free from disasters, pain, troubles, and dangers. Not only will one preserve one’s own life and prolong one’s years, but one’s descendants will also enjoy its blessings for generations to come.

My Dharma King said that all sentient beings are manifestations of the Dharma; we shouldn’t abandon the world to pursue the Dharma of liberation. Doing worldly things well is practice itself. Know that the Way is in the world; everything is Dharma. Everything is practice. Practice, from afar, is Buddha; up close, it is love. Om Mani Padme Hum!
Grateful for the Buddha’s blessings upon all beings! If we too can be a pure lotus, the lotus need not grow in a pure land; a pure heart makes the Buddha-land pure. A pure heart gives rise to wisdom. Single-mindedly reciting the Buddha’s name, dwelling on nothing, and performing one good deed daily, we can reach the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss without needing to be reborn in the Pure Land. Namo Amitabha Buddha!
