Before we know it, it’s almost the fifth month of the lunar calendar again. When May arrives, the first thing that comes to mind for most people is the Dragon Boat Festival. But do you know about some very important taboos in May?
Han Chinese folklore considers the fifth month of the lunar calendar to be a “poisonous month,” a month to be approached with the utmost care. Ancient Han Chinese customs dictated that couples should abstain from sexual intercourse during this month, and that virtuous people should moderate their desires, eat a light diet, reduce sour flavors and increase bitter flavors to benefit the liver and kidneys. This is a time for quiet rest, harmonizing with nature and calming the mind. Abstaining from sexual intercourse for the entire month is considered extremely beneficial to both body and mind.
Therefore, there was an ancient custom of sending women back to their parents’ home for a month during the fifth month of the lunar calendar. The nine most poisonous days within this period required extra caution. The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the first of these nine days, hence the many Han Chinese folk customs associated with it, such as drinking realgar wine, wearing sachets, and inserting mugwort to ward off evil and poison. These customs all embody the wisdom and experience passed down from ancient times.
The fifth month of the lunar calendar is commonly known as the “poisonous month.” Many people laugh it off upon hearing this, dismissing it as superstition. But how much do you really know about the wisdom accumulated over five thousand years of Chinese history? There’s much you don’t know, and you can’t simply dismiss it as superstition. Let’s unravel its mysteries.
Starting from the fifth day of the fifth lunar month (also known as the Dragon Boat Festival), the following nine days—the fifth, sixth, seventh, fifteenth, sixteenth, seventeenth, twenty-fifth, twenty-sixth, and twenty-seventh—are considered the “Nine Poisonous Days of Heaven and Earth’s Intercourse.” The fourteenth day of the fifth lunar month is the “Day of Heaven and Earth’s Intercourse,” making a total of ten days. During these ten days, one must be dignified and abstinent, strictly prohibiting killing and sexual activity, otherwise, one will severely harm one’s health, deplete one’s vital energy, and exhaust one’s essence. Of course, the thirteenth day of the fifth lunar month is also very important and should be avoided. In short, if one can abstain from sexual intercourse throughout the entire fifth lunar month, practicing abstinence, it will greatly benefit the body’s recovery. The mysteries of the Daoist principles of heaven and earth are truly indescribable.
The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic) contains a dialogue between the Yellow Emperor and the Plain Girl, discussing taboo days for sexual intercourse. The Plain Girl says: “Every year in the fifth lunar month, the energies of heaven and earth unite. Men and women should not have sexual intercourse during this time. Anyone who does will die within three years. How can this be verified? Take a foot of new white cloth and hang it on the east wall that night. The next morning, it will be stained with blood. Abstain from sexual intercourse, especially those with strong sexual desires, as they may lose their true yang energy during this ‘five poisonous months.’ Once true yang energy is lost, life will not be long!”
May is the month of harmony between heaven and earth, when yin and yang are indistinguishable. The body’s organs and blood are greatly affected. To preserve one’s essence and cherish life, one must calm the mind and guard the inner self in order to get through this month safely. Symptoms include feeling empty inside, weakness in walking, and lack of energy.
Many people disbelieve this advice, yet even knowing it, they might not dare to break the law. Observing the night sky at midnight on the 16th day of the fifth lunar month, the sky appears pale red. Midnight (11 PM to 1 AM) is not the time for sunset; the red color at this time must have a reason. Human understanding of nature is extremely limited.
Taoist medicine teaches that humans are one with the universe, and the five internal organs are all influenced by the workings of heaven and earth. This solar term is a time of struggle between yin and yang, a time of life and death. It is advisable to abstain from sexual activity starting from the first day of the fifth lunar month and continue this practice for a month. If one can truly restrain their sexual desires, all illnesses will naturally disappear.
Nowadays, people often experience various sudden illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and myocardial infarction, accompanied by aches and pains in the lower back and legs, numbness and weakness in the spine and shoulders, a feeling of heat in the back, persistent cough, occasional dizziness and headaches, and occasional blurred vision and eye pain. In autumn and winter, they may experience chills and fear of wind, and cold hands and feet. In spring and summer, they may experience sore throat, red eyes, abdominal pain, and heatstroke.
In the prime of life, one may encounter various ailments, the root cause of which is invariably the failure to practice moderation in sexual activity. The illness progresses gradually, from minor to severe; though initially small, it can develop into a serious condition over time. One must fear death and be mindful of this from the outset. Excessive desire harms life, and no medicine can truly remedy this. Those who indulge in lust rely on drugs to satisfy their desires, which is the very foundation of their own destruction. Herbs and tree bark can hardly replenish marrow and essence; their nourishing properties are merely yin or yang imbalances, used to circulate qi and blood. Once qi and blood are depleted, even medicine cannot remedy the situation. As the ancients said, “A hundred pills are not as good as a night of peaceful sleep.” One should never rely on medicine to nourish the body.
The dates of death are related to the moon’s orbit, the Earth’s revolution around the sun, and weather changes on Earth. Humans are extremely insignificant in the universe, and any change in celestial bodies will affect humans—this has been confirmed by modern science. Ancient Chinese theories relied more on philosophical reasoning and statistical verification than on laboratory experiments. As for the basis for the ancient health practitioners’ lists of days of death, that is something only modern people can explore.
The fifth month of the lunar calendar is commonly known as the “poisonous month,” and there are nine days within it that are harmful to the body, deplete energy, and exhaust vital essence. These are what the ancients called the “Nine Poisonous Days.”
Some practitioners will fast in May, which can help them cultivate their character, cleanse their intestines and detoxify, lose weight, regulate yin and yang, and avoid the five poisonous months by sleeping separately from their family members, thus achieving multiple benefits.
The following are the “Nine Poisonous Days” and “Days of Harmony Between Heaven and Earth” in the fifth month of the lunar calendar in 2017. Please be extremely cautious during these ten days, or even the entire month.
