An Awkward Variation on Love
—”Right Now, Wrong Then”
Behind those awkward love stories between men and women, what is the truth?
“Hong Sang-soo’s new film ‘Introduction’ easily won the Best Screenplay Award at the Berlin Film Festival. I watched the film during the Shanghai International Film Festival. The film itself is not a masterpiece, but it marks a new stage in Hong Sang-soo’s filmmaking approach.”

Hong Sang-soo is hailed as the foremost writer-auteur of Korean cinema. Born into the Korean independent film movement, he is currently one of the most experimental independent film directors in Korea. He was among the first generation of directors to study abroad, skillfully integrating the experimental film spirit he learned overseas into his own national cinema.
As South Korea’s leading intellectual director, Hong Sang-soo has written his structuralist texts in his many works over the years. He is undoubtedly the greatest film structuralist of our time, and perhaps even one of the greatest in history.
Along with Hong Sang-soo’s rising status in film and television, his audience size has also increased. However, domestic audiences know him more because of Kim Min-hee; the token of their illicit affair was the Best Actress award from the previous Berlin Film Festival.
The 2015 film “Right Now, Wrong Then” marked the first collaboration between the two and the beginning of their relationship. After that, Kim Min-hee became the sole lead in Hong Sang-soo’s films, and even the plots of the films were related to their romance.
Right Now, Wrong Then: One of Hong Sang-soo’s most important films, marking the beginning of his “Kim Min-hee era” and showcasing one of his most structurally revealing works. Right Now, Wrong Then: The film tells the same story twice, but the two versions lead to different endings.
Through this awkward romantic affair, we get a glimpse into the core of Hong Sang-soo’s films—authenticity.
Behind these stories of love between men and women, the question Hong Sang-soo truly wanted to ask was: what is real?
