The story of older men in a Dutch report – lack of sex life

A survey report published by the Dutch Social and Cultural Programme (SCP) on Valentine’s Day revealed that 15% of elderly people lack sexual contact, resulting in a lack of interest in life, loss of confidence, loneliness, and mental health problems.

At the end of last year, the news department of Dutch television station RTL conducted a survey of more than 600 people aged 55 and above. 78 % of the elderly people longed to receive affection from the opposite sex, such as being touched, hugged, or having a pleasant conversation, which does not necessarily have to be sexual contact.

One-quarter of the respondents felt that holding hands was enough; only one-tenth of the elderly respondents felt a need for sexual contact.

According to a report by RTL News, there are sex workers who specifically cater to elderly men. The station interviewed a woman named Tika Stardust , who spoke about her experience working in nursing homes. She believes that the sexual needs of the elderly are not adequately addressed, and the issue is not openly discussed. She said that the elderly don’t necessarily need sexual contact; they just want intimacy, and some even have dementia. She feels that each visit brings them some peace.

The Social and Cultural Planning Bureau is currently at the stage of recognizing this topic.

According to John Meuffels , owner of 50plusMatch , a dating website for seniors , his site has 25,000 to 30,000 active members, and traffic to both the website and app has been steadily increasing, with a 10% increase in January compared to the same period last year , indicating a strong desire among seniors to find new love. Singles over 50 are becoming more empowered, and thanks to advancements in computer and mobile phone technology, they are taking control of their desire to find a partner.

He said his website has had 1,600 success stories in two years, and some people have cancelled their registration because they have found their other half.

NOS interviewed Elisa , a 73- year- old woman who checks her dating apps three times a day, morning, noon, and night. She became a widow two years ago after her husband passed away, and now hopes to find a suitable man to spend her later years with.

She opened an account on a dating website a year ago while on vacation with a fellow widow. So far, she has viewed the profiles of more than 5,600 men.

She shared her experiences and criteria for choosing a partner. Besides physical appearance, she mentioned having met several men, but unfortunately, she hasn’t found her ideal match yet. One man she got along with very well, but on their second meeting, he made sexual advances, so they parted ways. She felt that many older men have very strong sexual desires, which she dislikes. However, she admitted that once they’ve gotten to know each other, spending a night or two together isn’t necessarily a bad thing; sex and love would naturally follow.

However, she realized that men her age almost all preferred much younger women. Should she then consider marrying an 80- year-old man? But she didn’t want to become a nanny or nurse.

Therefore, she plans to temporarily stop her efforts to find a partner on dating websites and patiently wait for her ideal man to appear; if he doesn’t, she would rather remain single for the rest of her life.
