I recently listened to a very interesting English podcast, which was an episode of Modern Love produced by The New York Times. It was called A widow’s guide to sex, which I interpreted as a widow’s guide to sex.
Although the show’s name is provocative, the content is surprisingly a mix of humor, sadness, emotion, and shock!
This episode features an 82-year-old grandmother who recounts her wild dating experiences in her youth, how she met and fell in love with her husband, her feelings of disconnection from her body after her husband’s death from cancer, her efforts to regain that connection, and finally, her encounter with someone she loves, where they explore and experience the beauty of sex and love together.
This grandmother’s latest book is about how to rebuild intimacy and passion after losing a loved one. This is also the core content of this podcast episode.
After hearing this, my first reaction was, wow, people abroad are so open-minded! An 82-year-old grandmother can talk about her dating stories and sexual experiences so humorously and naturally on such a large platform. And there’s even a platform where people can talk about these things without being banned or taken down.
Of course, by “openness” I mean an attitude and mindset towards sex that is natural and normal. People should view this as naturally as they view someone needing to drink water.
You need to drink water when you’re thirsty, but how should you replenish fluids after running? How should someone who got lost in the desert and almost died of thirst, develops PTSD after being rescued, drink water? Talking about these things seems quite ordinary, right?
So, how can someone who has lost their partner start a new intimate relationship and enjoy sex again? This is a rather taboo topic in our country. No one would discuss either of these things individually, let alone put them together.
So I think this content is quite interesting and can give people a lot of new inspiration and insights.
The podcast Modern Love is really interesting; each episode features someone sharing their love story. It comes from a column of the same name in The New York Times.
Sometimes you hear some dramatic stories, like someone using AI to chat with up to 3,000 people a day on a dating app. Other times, you hear very realistic stories, like what happens to a couple who agreed not to have children before marriage when an unplanned pregnancy occurs. Of course, there are also some very touching and heartwarming stories, like this one.
Why don’t we have a platform like this to tell these stories?
Open a podcast, and the top-ranked content is either business and finance, narratives of elite personalities, or self-growth. It’s clear that our inner world is eagerly striving for upward growth, wanting to acquire financial knowledge, make money, and then achieve self-improvement to become elites.
Elites don’t need love, except in Jinjiang Literature City.
Our imagination of humankind is still too narrow.
