As women age, their sexual physiology and psychology also change. American psychoanalyst and sex therapist Alan Ariel believes that a woman’s life can be divided into six stages of psychosexual development, starting from the age of 16.
16-25 years old: Romanticism. Generally speaking, women begin to experience sexual desire and awareness from the age of 16. They study their own bodies and experience the pleasure that comes with them. These feelings and emotions are intense, but childhood memories of purity and chastity still remain, so they maintain some childlike defensiveness.
During this stage, young women, while seeking security, may be bolder and even more adventurous in their sexual relationships, pursuing romantic and alluring sex as if seeking their Prince Charming. Women at this time must be mindful of safety; no matter how intense the feelings, they should take precautions to avoid unintended pregnancy.
Ages 25-38: Focus on Creativity. During this stage, women are more mature both psychologically and physiologically. They understand their bodies better, know how to bring pleasure to themselves and their partners. They are no longer shy or insecure in front of their partners, but open and confident, able to explore boldly. This is a good time to communicate more with your partner, try different sexual techniques, and add novelty to your sex life. Furthermore, women over 35 often experience a stronger libido and increased physical sensitivity; couples can create more opportunities to fully enjoy the pleasure of sex.
38-47 years old: Enjoying pleasure. By the time a woman is 40, her children have grown up, perhaps even left home for school, and she begins to have ample time to examine her personal and sexual lives. Femininity and desire begin to take center stage in her life.
Women at this stage are mature and confident, able to control their emotions with ease, preventing their desires from becoming excessive, but also not trying to hide their sexual needs. This effortless control over their libido leads to more intense orgasms. In fact, many women experience their first orgasm at this stage.
Ages 47-50: Seeking. These four years are a significant turning point for women, as they approach the age of fifty, inevitably experiencing many doubts and yearning for answers. Once they find the answers and are satisfied with their marriage, they will look to the future with joy and peace. If dissatisfied, they will question their marriage. This questioning doesn’t necessarily lead to divorce, but rather to seeking ways to improve the relationship. During this period, independent and respectful communication between spouses is crucial. Take time to rationally dispel doubts about life, marriage, and sex, and don’t assume that “sex can solve all relationship problems.”
50-55 years old: Yes, and more! Women in this stage experience an unprecedented surge in libido, often described in the West as a “cougar,” while in China it’s called “sitting on the ground sucking the earth.” Women in this age group are generally going through menopause; the cessation of menstruation causes significant physiological and psychological changes, frequently accompanied by severe anxiety or irritability. However, this doesn’t mean the end of their libido; quite the opposite. Once hormone levels stabilize, women begin to seek sexual satisfaction with extreme openness and intense sexual urges. They will fully enjoy the wonders of sex and immerse themselves passionately in the pleasure of orgasm.
After 55: Postmenopausal Orgasm. After age 55, a woman’s libido generally remains unchanged, and she may even experience very intense postmenopausal orgasms. At this stage, they focus solely on pleasure during sex. Due to physiological reasons, to avoid feeling powerless, couples can develop a training program to enhance their sexual performance and ensure mutual satisfaction.
