A gay man is dumped by his boyfriend whom he deeply loves. A straight woman has no intention of marrying her current boyfriend. Heartbroken,
the gay man moves in with the straight woman. Through continued contact, they develop a mutual attraction and promise to consider each other family. The straight woman discovers she is pregnant but remains steadfast in her refusal to marry the father. They are not a good match. The gay man promises to stay with the straight woman forever and help raise the child.
Conflict arises when the gay man meets his true love and brings her home for pleasure. The straight woman feels betrayed and, after careful consideration, painfully lets go of the gay man.
At the end of the film, the straight woman has a partner, but not a husband in the legal sense. The gay man lives with his new love, but they remain friends with the straight woman, like family. The child’s father, having long understood the straight woman’s perspective, happily becomes the father of a child outside of a marriage with the mother.
The first large part of the film reads like a typical soap opera. Aside from the straight woman’s boyfriend’s somewhat humorous personality, the plot is rather dull, mainly focusing on the emotional development between the straight woman and the gay man. In the latter part, when the gay man meets his true love, the conflicts between the characters reach their climax. The film deeply reflects on interpersonal relationships and the relationship between love and how people interact. It evokes both genuine emotion and a sense of bittersweet acceptance. “One shouldn’t be too hard on oneself if the person one loves responds less enthusiastically than expected.” At the end of the film, the relationships between the characters fully accept their different levels of love, and everyone finds the greatest joy and happiness in their relationships.
The emotional lives of men and women take on a new form, no longer confined to the form of marriage, because love and freedom come first.
Watching this film, I was struck by the environment in which American teenagers grow up, especially their freedom to confide in and discuss their sexual anxieties. Secondly, I was impressed by the tolerance and understanding Americans show towards homosexuality. The most moving part was the song at the end, “Trying to Solve Your Confusion.”
Jennifer Aniston is very touching; I hadn’t felt this way before when I saw her photos. In addition, I feel that the translation of the title is not quite appropriate; I think “My Emotional Dream” would be more suitable.
