It Creeps Up on You: The Origins of Human Sexual Desire

Sexual desire refers to the craving for sex. Sexologists believe that sexual desire is an instinctive desire that is beneficial for procreation. For most animals, sexual desire only exists during estrus, which is usually seasonal, while in humans it can occur at any time after sexual maturity.

Many people may wonder where human sexual desire comes from. In fact, human sexual desire is determined by hormones, and the different hormones in men and women often determine a person’s temperament! Male hormones often make men more sexually active, while female hormones often make them more attractive.

Human sexual needs begin with puberty. During puberty, the levels of hormones in both men and women gradually increase, leading to the maturation of sexual function and a growing intensity of sexual desire. Suppression of this desire can cause adolescent sexual anxiety. Male sexual desire radiates outwards from the genitals, while female sexual desire concentrates from the periphery of the body towards the genitals. Men satisfy their sexual needs by desiring intercourse and experiencing pleasure through ejaculation. Women, on the other hand, can satisfy their sexual needs through various sources such as sexual fantasies, caresses, kissing, and intercourse. The occurrence of sexual desire is related to the physiological basis of both sexes: firstly, the endocrine system, composed of sex hormones and gonads, maintains the basic tension and excitability of sexual desire in both sexes; secondly, the nervous system, composed of the cerebral cortex, spinal cord hypoerectomy centers, erogenous zones, and conduction nerves, ensures the body’s timely and effective response to the environment.

So, what exactly determines male and female sexual desire? The answer is testosterone. Then some might ask, does female libido also depend on testosterone? Yes, you read that right. While estrogen maintains a woman’s sexual attractiveness, testosterone also determines her sexual desire. Don’t assume that only men have testosterone. A woman’s ovaries and adrenal glands are also sources of testosterone. A woman’s body contains only 1/20th the amount of testosterone as a man, yet it plays a crucial role in stimulating libido! Male hormones determine a person’s libido.

Androgens not only increase the likelihood of completing sexual activity once it begins, but also enhance female comfort before arousal. Furthermore, androgens are related to the sensitivity of erogenous zones, the frequency of orgasms, the intensity of sexual fantasies, and the frequency of orgasms in dreams. A decrease in androgens leads to a decrease in libido, with direct consequences including decreased libido and difficulty achieving orgasm.

During sex, women rely even more heavily on estrogen, as it determines the secretion of vaginal lubrication. Insufficient lubrication leads to discomfort and pain, making us less willing to have sex with our partners. Because we anticipate pain, our libido level decreases significantly.
