Today, a news story concerning all women has been buried:
Cervical cancer in China is showing a trend of affecting younger women, with about half of these women of childbearing age having been infected with at least one type of HPV. Malignant cervical cancer is primarily caused by the HPV virus.
In people’s subconscious, it seems that only “middle-aged women” get cervical cancer. Little do they know that death knows no age; 17 to 24 years old and 40 to 44 years old are the peak ages for cervical cancer.
Shockingly, many women have little understanding of HPV. They are even more reluctant to discuss gynecological diseases such as ovarian cysts, pelvic inflammatory disease, and vaginitis.
This also reflects the pessimistic view of how little attention Chinese women pay to gynecological health.
Today, I’d like to discuss this private yet important topic with you all:
Gynecological diseases.
01
A couple of days ago, a young man posted a request for help regarding a gynecological issue. Apparently, a few days after having sex with his girlfriend, she experienced discomfort in her genital area.
Out of concern and a sense of responsibility, the young man suggested that his girlfriend get a gynecological checkup.
Despite numerous attempts to persuade her, my girlfriend became shy and resistant whenever “gynecology” was mentioned, completely disregarding her health. Below this post, there are many related questions and recommendations, such as:
Should I tell my mother if I get a gynecological disease at 19?
What is it like to get a gynecological disease in your twenties?
Without exception, most of the girls who answered the questions chose to remain anonymous.
This made the man realize that few Chinese women are able to take the term “gynecological disease” seriously.
The girls’ cautiousness adds to the taboo surrounding gynecological diseases. Once they discover discomfort, they either endure it or secretly buy medicine. Even the “brave” women who do seek medical attention cannot be at ease; simply opening their legs makes them feel as if they have lost all dignity and are sitting on pins and needles.
A girl recalled her personal “dark history”: It felt like a snake being pinched at its vital spot or a cat being choked by the back of its neck.
She likened the gynecological bed to a chopping board, and herself to a fish on a chopping block. Especially when the male doctor ordered her to take off her pants, a wave of shame immediately washed over her.
Why?
Because of the fear of being judged and the worry of being treated differently, and in fact, even today many people still consider it a “dirty disease.” Prejudice makes it a woman’s unspeakable secret.
“To get this disease at such a young age, one must have an immoral private life.”
“You’re already infected with HPV, and you still say you haven’t been promiscuous?”
In the film “Cry Me a Sad River,” the protagonist, Yi Yao, accidentally contracts genital warts from a towel used by a customer. After a long internal struggle, she tries to tell her mother but still finds it difficult to bring herself to do it.
Finally, she secretly went to see a doctor, but her classmates maliciously spread the news, and then she was subjected to a torrent of isolation, exclusion, ridicule, and slander.
Because in their eyes, having a gynecological disease means you’ve had sexual intercourse;
Then, naturally, one would conclude that you are promiscuous and shameless.
The stigma associated with gynecological diseases among women stems not only from prejudice but also from ignorance.
02
There is a group on Douban called “Reject Gynecological Diseases” .
Words that people usually avoid talking about, girls can discuss openly here, such as menstrual cramps, vaginitis, and high-risk HPV.
The group is like a confessional, bringing together over 200,000 members.
The girls banded together, shared knowledge and experiences, and engaged in self-therapy.
Even if the initial intention was good.
For professional gynecological issues, some people are unwilling to seek medical attention proactively, instead blindly following online opinions. Ultimately, they are misled by pseudo-gynecological knowledge, delaying their diagnosis, wasting money, and even creating illnesses where none existed before.
One girl in the group shared her experience of seeking treatment for cervical erosion.
She was wearing a mask that day, and when she heard the test results showed that she had grade three cervical erosion, she was so nervous that she almost collapsed.
The surgery would cost several thousand yuan, more than her tuition for a semester.
Fearing her parents’ scolding, she bought some oral and topical medications online. However, instead of curing her cervical erosion, she also experienced recurring itching in her genital area.
Like this girl, many girls in the group were instinctively afraid and ashamed when they learned they had cervical erosion, and dared not tell their parents.
In fact, cervical erosion does not only occur with sexual activity, and it is not a disease at all.
It is a normal physiological phenomenon in women, called cervical columnar epithelial ectopia .
No matter how far it progresses, no treatment will cost a penny. This term was already discarded by the journal *Obstetrics and Gynecology* back in 2008.
Take HPV infection as another example.
Due to a lack of gynecological knowledge, many people are unaware of this DNA virus called human papillomavirus (HPV ), which is why women need to be more vigilant.
It has been identified into more than 130 subtypes, and there is still no specific drug; the only way to prevent it is through vaccination.
If it tests positive, it can metastasize into the terrible cervical cancer.
How cunning is it?
People who have had sexual intercourse have an 80% risk of contracting HPV. Even with condoms, it is not possible to completely prevent the transmission of the virus.
Some say that asexuality and a lack of love ensure safety.
joke!
Don’t think that just because you don’t have a sex life, you can rest easy!
Regardless of age or gender, you can get infected if you touch a towel used by someone carrying the HPV virus, even if you are by a swimming pool or in a sauna.
Sexual activity is not the number one killer of gynecological diseases.
Ignorance not only instills fear in patients, but also becomes a weapon for those with prejudice.
03
Gynecological diseases are like time bombs placed inside the body.
It is known for its persistent and recurring nature, and if left untreated for a long time, it can easily lead to chronic illness.
Compared to idle gossip, the hidden dangers of gynecological diseases are what women should pay more attention to.
I wonder if anyone has seen the documentary “Life’s Fate”. The farewell letter from the protagonist, Guo Ling, to her family is very touching.
“Dear Mom and Dad, by the time you read this letter, I may no longer be by your side…”
At just 22 years old, in the prime of her youth, Guo Ling was diagnosed with late-stage cervical cancer. The tumor had metastasized to her sacrum, and she could only alleviate her pain through radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
As the only daughter in her family, she only has 5 years left to live, with a survival rate of less than 20%.
Guo Ling’s ordeal was undoubtedly a devastating blow to her parents.
The father works odd jobs at construction sites, and the mother takes care of her 24 hours a day, just hoping that she can survive.
Cervical cancer is now second only to breast cancer in incidence, making it the second leading gynecological threat to women’s health.
For cervical cancer that has already spread, even removing the entire uterus is futile.
What’s even more frightening is that it’s adept at lying in wait, leaving no trace in the early stages. So by the time it’s discovered, it’s usually already in its late stages.
In 2018 alone, my country had 106,000 new cases of cervical cancer and 47,700 deaths annually.
Approximately 311,000 women worldwide die from cervical cancer.
According to a World Health Organization survey, China has the highest incidence of gynecological diseases among women in the world, with approximately 200,000 women dying from gynecological diseases each year, and the incidence rate among married women is as high as 93.6%.
In other words, 9 out of 10 people suffer from gynecological diseases.
This data far exceeded the gentleman’s understanding.
It also made me feel incredibly sad.
These women died from seemingly insignificant gynecological diseases. They were either trapped by money or face, so they made do with their bodies, allowing the disease to grow until they were given a cold, hard death sentence by the “late stage”.
04
After writing this article, I hope that all female friends can face their bodies squarely.
Gynecological diseases are illnesses, not some shameful monster.
Don’t mistake it for a common cold.
If you feel unwell, there’s no need to hide it. Just invite a friend or ask your mother to accompany you to the hospital for timely treatment.
At the same time, good lifestyle habits are also important to reduce gynecological infections. For example
1. Do not wash underwear together, do not share towels, and dry clothes before wearing
2. Pay attention to genital hygiene; never hold your urine, no matter how busy you are.
3. It is best to get the HPV vaccine and use condoms during sexual intercourse; have a gynecological examination every year, and refrain from sexual intercourse for three days before the examination
I hope all women maintain a happy mood and cherish and accept their bodies.
