I’d like to ask a question I’ve wanted to ask but haven’t dared to: Do girls masturbate? How do they masturbate?
It wasn’t until I saw a study in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy that my doubts were fully and systematically clarified.
This study invited 2,215 adult women to participate in a series of surveys on masturbation, including the frequency, reasons, specific masturbation methods, and information on orgasmic latency, orgasmic pleasure, and difficulty achieving orgasm.
Research indicates that female masturbation has long been stigmatized, primarily due to ideological or religious control that views it as immoral. However, the medical community has proven that prohibiting female masturbation can cause numerous psychological and physical disorders.
As society becomes more open, a large number of women have learned to use masturbation to please themselves. In the 1970s, Clifford (1978) surveyed 100 female college students, and the rate of masturbation was 74%. More recently, a British study involving 6,400 women showed that 71% of women had masturbated at some point, and 57% of women had masturbated in the past year.
This study included 2215 participants with an average age of 28.8 years, who were mainly divided into three groups:
The first part is about American women who visit Reddit forums.
The second part is about Hungarian women visiting the Hungarian research homepage.
The third part mainly consists of students from a university in Hungary.
This study primarily used questionnaires (both online and offline), which included 42 questions. The questions mainly covered: basic demographic information, primary sexual activity in the past 12 months/most recent primary sexual activity, frequency, reasons, and specific methods of masturbation, as well as information on orgasmic latency, orgasmic pleasure, and difficulty achieving orgasm. After data analysis, the following questions were answered:
1. What are the differences between women who masturbate frequently and women who don’t?
Compared to women who don’t masturbate, women who masturbate more frequently are more likely to experience persistent anxiety or depression, and are also more likely to have a sexual partner. Compared to women who don’t masturbate, women who masturbate more frequently have lower satisfaction with their current sex life, but they value their sex life more and have a higher level of interest in it.
2. Why do women masturbate?
The biggest reason was “pleasure and satisfaction ,” with 64% of women considering it the most important factor. The second most important reason was “stress relief/relaxation” (10% of women considered this the most important reason, and 45% considered it one of the important reasons). The third most important reason was “reducing sexual tension” ( 11% of women considered this the most important reason, and 41% considered it one of the important reasons). Other reasons included “lack of sex life,” “overcoming anxiety,” “filling a void,” and “lack of sexual partners.”
3. How do women usually masturbate?
According to data analysis, the most common method of female masturbation is clitoral stimulation (97%), followed by vaginal stimulation (45%). Among these subjects, about 41% of the masturbating women use pornography, 39% of the masturbating women have sexual fantasies, more than 30% of the masturbating women use vibrators or dildos, and less than 35% of the respondents chose other masturbation activities.
The reason why 97% of women choose to stimulate their clitoris during masturbation is mainly because the clitoris has a high density of nerve endings and is very sensitive. It has more than 8,000 sensitive nerve endings, twice the number of nerve endings on the glans penis of a man, making it extremely sensitive. Therefore, touching and rubbing the clitoris is the most common form of masturbation.
Stimulating the vagina is also a common form of masturbation. 45% of the women in the study stimulated their vaginas during masturbation. However, this method is usually accompanied by stimulation of the clitoris, because stimulating the vagina may rub against the nerves on the clitoris.
4. What is the relationship between the causes, main activities, and frequency of masturbation?
Experiments have shown that different reasons for masturbation also affect the frequency of female masturbation.
Women who masturbate to “relieve stress/relax” or “fill a gap when they’re not too busy” tend to focus on clitoral stimulation. Women who only stimulate their clitoris during masturbation masturbate less frequently, about once a month. Women who masturbate for “pleasure and satisfaction” masturbate the most frequently, about once a week, while those who masturbate for other reasons masturbate once a month or once every two weeks.
5. Do age, frequency of masturbation, and satisfaction with sexual relationships affect the masturbation process?
Older women tend to have a shorter latency period to orgasm through masturbation, experience more intense pleasure, and have less difficulty achieving orgasm.
Women who masturbate more frequently are generally more likely to reach orgasm and experience more intense pleasure when they do. Women who have difficulty achieving orgasm tend to have a longer latency period and experience less intense pleasure during orgasm.
Women who masturbate for pleasure are the least likely to have difficulty achieving orgasm, while women who masturbate to “reduce sexual tension” or “overcome anxiety” have the highest rates of difficulty achieving orgasm.
6. Is the frequency of masturbation related to the frequency of sexual intercourse with one’s partner?
Overall, the frequency of masturbation is not significantly related to the frequency of sexual intercourse with a partner. However, for women who masturbate due to “lack of sexual activity/their partner’s lack of desire for sexual activity,” the higher the frequency of masturbation, the lower the frequency of sexual intercourse. Conversely, for women who masturbate because “their partner’s sexual intercourse does not satisfy them,” the higher the frequency of masturbation, the higher the frequency of sexual intercourse.
In short, sexual needs aren’t exclusive to men. Women need sex just like people need to eat and drink ; there’s nothing shameful about it. If women have 100 ways to make themselves happy, the pleasure of masturbation is like a gift from heaven—enjoy it! Of course, the premise is not to overdo it, so as not to harm your health…
So, have you grasped the key steps to making yourself happy? Those who didn’t understand, go back and review…
