Exploring the Hidden Realities of Life in Japanese Women’s Prisons

Prisons aren’t five-star hotels, and living conditions are far from ideal. However, it’s not as dark as you might imagine. Three meals a day are provided. The sexual frustration of inmates in Japanese women’s prisons urgently needs to be addressed.

Female prisoners in six women’s prisons across Japan are facing severe sexual repression. Nearly one-third of the country’s 2,800 female inmates are around 30 years old, a time when they are typically sexually active and eager for sex. Long prison sentences leave these prisoners unable to meet their sexual needs, leading to restlessness and agitation. Even more seriously, over half of the female prisoners have drug addiction tendencies, making them feel intensely sexually frustrated within the prison walls.

The prison provides pornographic comics and adult magazines.

A woman named Akiko, who served time in five of Japan’s six women’s prisons, has a deep understanding of the sexual repression experienced by female prisoners: Every night, you could see all the female inmates tossing and turning on their mattresses. Some relieved their sexual urges through masturbation, and many were complained about by others for their loud moans. Akiko told reporters that while prisoners could buy books with their own money, the prison library offered many more explicit books, such as erotic comics or adult magazines, for the female prisoners to “entertain themselves.”

Author Sayuri Yokota, a former prisoner and now an anti-drug activist, pointed out in an interview that any man in prison would be sexually attractive to female inmates. “They rarely see men in prison; even the guards are women, so even the ugliest man doesn’t matter to them.”

“When I was incarcerated, I had to work in a workshop where there was a very fat, big male guard. But every female inmate willingly let him do whatever he wanted because he also secretly sold painkillers to the female prisoners. Some female inmates would flirt with any man they could get their hands on, even cleaning workers in their 50s—as long as they could get him an erection, they could have a good time,” Sayuri Yokota said.

Another woman, using the pseudonym Momoko, once served time at Wakayama Women’s Prison in Japan. She recalled how her past prison experience turned innocent young girls into shameless sluts: “Every three months, male entertainers would come to the prison to perform for the female prisoners, but we would all stare at the men’s crotches, imagining how wonderful it would feel to grab them with our hands.” The female prisoners would also make their own “sex toys” to satisfy their needs. Momoko said the most common way to play was to tie seven ballpoint pens together with rubber bands, wrap them in plastic bags, and that would become a dildo for masturbation.

However, the prison only provides each prisoner with three ballpoint pens, so to have a good time, they have to borrow pens from others. Some female prisoners need more than 10 pens to masturbate, saying that this is enough to match the size of their husbands or boyfriends.

They caught frogs and took turns inserting them into their genitals for pleasure.

Compared to masturbation with pens, some of the female prisoners’ other sex games seem bizarre. Momoko explained to the reporter, “Sometimes we catch frogs during exercise time, and we bring them back to our cells for a frog orgy. We decide on a order, then take turns inserting live frogs into our vaginas. The frogs jump around in fright inside, creating a strange sensation.” Playing this game requires caution. Momoko said that if you get too excited and contract your vagina too forcefully, you might suffocate the frog, and then the other female prisoners won’t get a turn. This is common in prison; some prisoners have even fought over frogs.

Homosexuality is forbidden; female prisoners use each other’s toes for gratification.

Some female inmates become masculine during their imprisonment, requesting that guards shave their heads on monthly haircut days so that other inmates will know they are lesbians. However, according to Akiko, this obvious homosexuality doesn’t necessarily work in prison. “If you try to strike up a conversation with those masculine inmates, the guards will be very angry because homosexuality is not encouraged in prison. If your love letters to them are discovered, you will be punished, such as being put in solitary confinement or having your parole revoked.”

Therefore, even though every female prisoner finds the masculine inmates sexy, they still cannot easily make contact. However, if the female prisoners are lucky, they can spread their legs at night and have other female prisoners satisfy their needs with their toes without anyone noticing, but this is very difficult. Momoko says that in prison, you can only shower twice a week, so you have to make sure you wash your feet immediately when you wake up in the morning, otherwise your toes will smell of other female prisoners’ genital secretions, which will let everyone know what you’ve done.
