Love is entirely a matter of attachment and separation; everyone must understand this. Otherwise, society today excessively glorifies love, portraying it as the sole purpose of life in many films and television programs. Influenced by this from a young age, many young people grow up lacking the ability to discern true love, which is truly regrettable!
In reality, love is a fragile thing, like a beautiful bubble that bursts at the slightest touch. When this bubble bursts, some people are greatly disappointed, and some even commit suicide in despair, which is truly unwise.
Buddhism’s profound revelation of love
Buddhism offers profound insights into love. In fact, the emotions between people are formed by various karmic connections from past and present lives. In love, some people come to collect debts, while others come to repay them. For example, if one person is deeply in love with another, experiencing affection upon first meeting, according to Buddhism, this is not a coincidence but likely stems from karmic debts from a previous life.
Of course, modern science cannot explain the complexity of love. This is because it only sees phenomena of this life, leaving the realm of past and future lives a blank slate. In this context, if you reject Buddhist perspectives outright, you will encounter many problems when facing emotional confusion.
Especially nowadays, many people’s love is possessive, with a lot of utilitarian elements—if the other person can make them happy, they’ll spend all their time with them; if they bring them pain, they’ll want to destroy them as soon as possible. This kind of love is actually the cause of suffering.
Love for all living beings
Not long ago, a tragedy occurred at a university: Before their postgraduate entrance exams, a girl told her boyfriend, “If we both pass, we can continue our relationship. If you pass and I don’t, our love can still continue. But if I pass and you don’t, then we’ll break up.” Perhaps it was fate, but the girl passed the exam, while the boy didn’t. The girl then said goodbye. The boy was heartbroken and couldn’t accept this fact. He rushed to the girl’s dormitory, strangled her to death, and then jumped to his death…
Compared to this selfish love, Buddhist love is equal care for all sentient beings without any conditions. Upon first hearing this, some might think, “Impossible! That’s too mystical!” But it’s not mystical at all. This concept has profound meaning; if a person possesses this kind of “love,” they possess the most precious treasure in the world.
I often think: humanity has made various scientific inventions, but that doesn’t necessarily mean success. True success lies in cultivating compassion and understanding the mysteries of the mind. Buddhism explained this principle in detail more than 2,500 years ago. I hope everyone will learn more about this, and not blindly pursue wealth, nor be like some people who see only money and have no morals whatsoever.
Pursuing wisdom that brings real benefits
I often talk to many college students, encouraging them to pursue wisdom that truly benefits their lives. This wisdom is extremely important; without it, even if you read thousands of books, you may not necessarily gain any benefit.
Some college students are quite pitiful. They are indeed very knowledgeable, but they have never studied Buddhism and do not understand Buddhist principles. Therefore, they can never understand some key issues, and they are in great distress when they encounter small setbacks, causing a lot of inconvenience to themselves and others.
In fact, even setting aside the profound Buddhist goals of attaining Buddhahood and liberating sentient beings, in real life, understanding some Buddhist principles, such as ” all things are impermanent and everyone will gradually grow old,” can change one’s inner values and greatly benefit one’s future.
Life is short, only a few decades, and encountering the truth is extremely rare. Once you do encounter it, you must never ignore it, otherwise you will surely regret it in the future. Many people are busy with emotions and wealth when they are young, and never seek the truth. Only at the last moment of their lives do they begin to think: “After death, will life continue? If so, what will I be like in my next life?” But by then, it is too late to think about these things.
Does the soul continue after death?
Everyone must understand that after death, it’s not like turning to ashes and disappearing completely. Although the body of this life is gone, the soul continues. In this life you are a human, and in the next life you may be a human or some other being. But no matter what you become, your life will continue, and whatever good or bad karma you have created in this life will surely ripen into corresponding karmic results of suffering or happiness in the next.
Regarding the existence of an afterlife, many people are “illiterate” in this regard. They cannot give reasons why it doesn’t exist, nor do they know how an afterlife would exist, let alone how to face it. These principles are basically not mentioned in secular doctrines, but Buddhism explains them very clearly.
In short, at the ultimate level, Buddhism believes that nothing exists, including emotions; while at the conventional level, it acknowledges the existence of emotions and does not oppose normal emotional life. However, Buddhism reminds people that emotions are impermanent and a cause of suffering, and that one should not become overly attached to them, otherwise, it will bring unexpected suffering.
