Sanmao once said that she went to the Sahara partly to see this mysterious land, and partly for Jose.
When Jose told her that he had applied for a job in the Sahara Desert and would be heading to this wild land ahead of her, this woman who had spent her whole life wandering did not hesitate or complain at all. Instead, she packed her bags and set off for the desert ahead of her, waiting for her lover to come to her in an unfamiliar town.
Before this, she was a free poet who traveled all over the world, and also a pampered young lady who was cherished by her family.
However, the moment she stepped into the Sahara, she was just an ordinary woman who wanted to have a home with Jose.
The initial days in the desert were more difficult than anyone could have imagined.
The house they rented was nothing more than the most dilapidated one in the desert:
The cement floor was full of potholes, the walls were mottled and peeling, there was no furniture, no running water, and electricity was only supplied for two hours a day.
Outside, yellow sand swirled in the air; inside, the heat was unbearable. Even getting a sip of clean water required a long journey to fetch it.
Everyone thought that a romantic person like Sanmao couldn’t possibly endure the hardships of the desert.
But she used her own two hands to transform this barren desert into a gentle haven that belonged only to them.
In “Building a Home from Scratch,” she wrote about the entire process of creating her home:
They picked up discarded coffin boards and handcrafted them into bookshelves and tables, giving the cold wooden boards a homely feel.
Empty soda bottles are washed clean and filled with wild thorn flowers picked from the desert, bringing life to the simple house.
Furthermore, discarded car tires can be washed clean, filled with cushions, and transformed into unique sofas.
She even filled the holes in the wall with hollow bricks and glass, planted greenery, and created a small garden in the desert.
And so, she transformed this dilapidated house, which everyone despised, into the most beautiful “art palace” in the Sahara Desert, attracting even the local governor’s wife to make a special trip to visit it.
Some say that loving someone is about seeing how much they can give you.
