a) Physiological
Lastella and colleagues (2019) found that about half of the participants felt their sleep quality improved because of bedtime pampering (regardless of whether they had an orgasm) . Another study also found that pampering oneself is a very common way to relieve stress and promote sleep (Carvalheira & Leal, 2013).
Furthermore, Hambach and colleagues (2013) also pointed out that DIY can relieve some types of pain. (Author’s note: This pain-relieving effect seems to vary from person to person; some people simply use DIY as a treatment, while others say it actually increases their pain.)
About half of the participants experienced improved sleep quality after DIY. However, the study also indicated that couples’ sex life has a greater impact on improving sleep quality… Be content with what you have! b) Psychological
At the end of the last century, researchers found that DIY enthusiasts tended to have higher self-confidence (Smith, Rosenthal, & Reichler, 1996). However, this study alone cannot determine whether the DIY activity itself influenced people’s psychological state.
However, combined with current neuroscience research, it has been found that the secretion of certain chemicals in the human body (such as adrenaline) can give us long-term happiness related to self-growth and a sense of meaning in life (Dfarhud et al., 2014); and DIY precisely promotes the secretion of these chemicals (Huizen, 2020).
So if someone insists that DIY is nothing more than pursuing pleasure, please tell them: You’re naive. I’m pursuing a deeper level of happiness in life!
c) Cognitive
Researchers compared participants who had frequent sexual activity with those who lacked it and found that those who had sexual activity performed better on memory tests (Wright & Jenks, 2016).
—Attention! Here’s the key point! In this study, researchers categorized DIY as a form of sexual activity. This means that whether it’s DIY or two-person (or even group) sex , as long as you remain sexually active, you’re contributing to the care of your memory!
Studies indicate that sexually active individuals outperform sexually inactive individuals in cognitive abilities (memory dimension).
Furthermore, scientists have discovered that drugs that enhance concentration actually work by stimulating the release of dopamine in the brain (Westbrook et al., 2020) – isn’t dopamine the familiar and highly effective pleasure-inducing substance we experience when doing DIY activities?
While it remains to be scientifically verified whether the dopamine released during DIY activities can improve our focus in other tasks, the fact that this can be tested in practice is already making people eager to try it!

How does DIY achieve such versatility?
Some people may wonder, what is the underlying principle behind DIY’s efficacy, which is comparable to the new generation of brain-boosting supplements?
Let me briefly list the chemicals that our brains release when we do DIY (Huizen, 2020):
Dopamine, endorphins, oxytocin, serotonin, prolactin, endocannabinoids, norepinephrine, and adrenaline…
All you need to do is move your hands, and these chemicals will become active in your body, further promoting various improvements. For example, one of the functions of prolactin is to protect the nervous system from damage when facing stress. (Author’s note: Due to space limitations, the effects of other chemicals on the body cannot be detailed here. Interested readers are welcome to consult the literature.)
